Explore Iquitos
Located in the northeastern jungle of Peru, Iquitos is the capital of Loreto and Maynas, surrounded by the Amazon, Nanay, and Itaya rivers. Founded in 1757 by Jesuit missionaries as San Pablo de los Napeanos, the city was inhabited by the Iquitos people after the Napeanos left in the late 18th century. Between 1880 and 1914, the rubber boom drove its growth, attracting Peruvians and Europeans in search of opportunity. This boom turned Iquitos into a commercial center, modernizing the city with new architecture and public services that improved the quality of life for its residents.
